3 whole-body health rituals using Manuka honey

Did you know Manuka honey is not just awesome for your diet, it can be a great health boost for other areas of your body too?

Extremely versatile, Manuka honey’s antibacterial and antimicrobial properties have been known historically to aid in our overall skin health and healing. Manuka honey is a hygroscopic substance used to keep things moist.

Simply put, Manuka honey attracts and retains moisture and can aid absorption of water vapour. While it hydrates it can also improve the penetration of other active ingredients and counteract the dehydrating properties of other active ingredients found in soaps and alcohols. The natural hydrating capability of Manuka honey makes it a key ingredient in many cosmetics with a moisturizing claim such as hair conditioner and body lotion.

We believe spending time on a whole body health routine can be an awesome way to aid overall health and wellbeing.

Here are our top 3 natural ways to use Manuka Honey:

1. Cleanse and calm, moisture rich Manuka face mask.

One of the more popular ways to use Manuka Honey topically is in a face mask. One method is to take the honey straight from the jar and apply for a complete Manuka honey face ritual. We recommend trying our different grades of MGO and UMF Manuka honey as they will have lesser and more potent effects.

One of our favorites is this recipe:

Always start with a clean face.

We recommend placing or wiping your face with a warm damp flannel to open the pores.

Then take one tablespoon of our MGO 850+ Manuka honey and place in a bowl.

We’ve used this particular grade as it’s carefully aged and highly active.

Mix in one teaspoon of oats or oatmeal.

We’ve used oats as they help absorb our skin’s excess oils which are often what leads to breakouts. Oats contain natural cleansers - compounds called saponins. Their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can also help to treat dry skin and remove dead skin cells. The perfect addition to a face mask.

Add 4 drops of lavender essential oil.

Lavender’s is one of the most widely used herbs, commonly chosen in aromatherapy for its purifying, cleansing and calming effects used for skin blemishes, acne and to soothe eczema and other skin irritants.

Mix these 3 ingredients together to form a paste and apply directly to the skin. Leave for 15-20 mins and wash off with a clean damp cloth. Add warm water if you find the mixture too thick.

2. Natural Manuka honey hair wash

Replenish and cleanser your hair and scalp with this natural Manuka honey hair wash. With it’s natural hydrating properties, Manuka honey provides an almost magical moisturising base to create an at-home ritual leaving you with silky soft hair. Good for anyone with dry hair and heat-styled or treated hair.

A recipe that Eve, our innovation lead uses weekly is:

  • One cup of warm water
  • One tablespoon of MGO 100+ Manuka Honey
  • One tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  • Five drops of tea tree essential oil

Mix these ingredients into a spray bottle and apply to dry hair. Leave it in for 10-15 minutes and then rinse with water.

We’ve used Apple Cider vinegar to help balance the hair and scalps natural pH avoiding the need for a chemical based shampoo. Tea tree oil is a great addition because of its potent antimicrobial and antifungal properties.

3. Rejuvenate with exfoliating Manuka body scrub

Potentially the most fun and natural way to use Manuka Honey is to make an exfoliating body scrub. They are an amazing addition to your weekly skincare routine as they help rejuvenate the skin by removing dead skin cells and keep your skin fresh and glowing. Best used on clean skin, during a bath or shower. They work to open the pores and prime the skin for moisture to penetrate.

A recipe that has become a team favorite is:

  • Three tablespoons of MGO 50+ Manuka Honey
  • One tablespoon of raw brown sugar
  • Three drops of jojoba oil
  • Three drops of melted coconut oil

To take your scrub to the next level, add a tablespoon of coffee to your scrub - this will not only make your bathroom smell like coffee (YUM) but works as a natural exfoliator and combined with the coconut oil, means your skin isn’t left to dry out like it is with an exfoliating glove. will also leave your skin feeling refreshed and silky smooth!
