Meet your herbs - Astragalus

What is Astragalus?

Part of the legume family, Astragalus is a plant with a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine and has over 2,000 species. There are a few different species of Astragalus found in supplements today.

We use the most potent and active part of Astragalus membranaceus as we consciously select the biological species of certain herbs that have clinically researched health benefits. We have been sure to use the root of Astragalus in our A Daily Dose of Immunity botanicals product as this is the part of the plan containing the most active constituents.

Astragalus was typically used in traditional Chinese medicine for a range of ailments including immune support, heart function, and respiratory support. Recent scientific research has shown that it has immune supporting properties in the body.

What are the benefits of Astragalus?

The only part of the plant that is used medicinally is the root. Due to its active plant compounds, Astragalus root has many potential health benefits. Some of which may be particularly helpful in the current pandemic. It has been shown to support inflammatory response, anti-ageing and what we mainly use it for; strengthening the immune system and providing immune support.

Astragalus gets its health benefits from three components; saponins, flavonoids and polysaccharides that come together to create the super root; Astragalus.

Saponins are a class of bioorganic compounds that are known for their ability to help the immune system and regulate cholesterol levels in the body.

Flavonoids (antioxidants) are a type of plant compound called polyphenols. These are widely found in fruits and vegetables such as blueberries and turmeric. The flavonoids in Astragalus support the body's immune system by helping fight off free radicals and aid the body's cellular structure. They are one of the compounds also naturally found in Mānuka Honey and contribute to the unique health properties of this honey.

The type of polysaccharides found in Astragalus are heteropolysaccharides with bioactive actions. Some of these actions include activating the production of certain immune cells (Macrophages) and activating immune cell maturation indicating that they have a supportive role in the immune response of the body.

The actions of these active constituents together create the super root; Astragalus.
